Message from Vice-President of Safety Jim Martin
There have been a lot of recent car break-ins in the Valentine Neighborhood as well as in many other areas. These usually happen because the thief sees something in the car to steal. This is Kansas City’s number one crime. It is especially frustrating to the Kansas City Police Department because it can easily be prevented if we would all use a little common sense. We have many other crime prevention and safety tips in our crime watch section. These include Holiday Safety Tips such as taking packaging to a recycling center rather than leaving it curbside, which is advertising to a thief.

Down Zoning in Valentine
If you have followed the newsletter since November 2010, you will be familiar with the initiative to downzone to single family some of the residential areas north of Valentine Road. The purpose is to preserve the single-family nature of our neighborhood. The area south of Valentine Road was downzoned to single family in the early 1990’s and the benefits have been to stabilize and preserve our neighborhood. The VNA Board has met with a representative of Kansas City Life Insurance Company about our plans and we think we have reached an understanding that benefits all. Jim Martin, a Vice-President of the VNA Board, has contacted City Planning about Valentine’s readiness to move this initiative along.

If you have not followed the downzoning initiative in the newsletters or are a new resident in Valentine and want to learn more about this, contact Pam Hoelzel ( 816-753-8289) and she will provide you with copies of recent newsletters.

Researching the History of Your House
There is a useful publication issued by the Missouri Valley Special Collections, of the Kansas City Public Library on Researching the History of Your House. When was your house built? Who was the architect? The builder? What style is it? Does it look like the original?

To get a copy of this bulletin, e-mail Pam Hoelzel (
hoelzelpam@aol.com) and she will put one in your mail box or pick up a copy when you are the Central Library/Missouri Valley Room. Once you learn the history, think about writing an article about it for the newsletter and website to share what you’ve learned with other residents.
